~Not the worldbuilding you expected but the worldbuilding you’re getting~
It may be due to my novelty addicted brain, but I have been very distracted from Brooklet Avenue worldbuilding… because I’ve been thinking about Brooklet Avenue Legacy worldbuilding. Yup, that’s right, I left B.A. for B.A. XD Anyways here’s some lore tidbits because I figured if I’m going to be thinking about it I may as well share with the class.
Also if you don’t know what B.A. Legacy is yet, it’s actual name is Brooklet Avenue: The Legacy of Nature’s Revival and is a future story within the world of B.A., its actually not that far into the future and in some cases can be considered a continuation of Nature’s Revival.
Legacy doesn’t currently have big antagonistic forces like The Infector or Madame Luetta, but one of the big events happening which is the center of a lot the POVs is that the city has been under different leadership, and this guy is very much trying to reestablish a controlled society. He’s creating armed forces to deal with the Infection, is focusing on material gathering for things such as metals (more specifically iron), and is trying to get the trains back up and running. I don’t know yet if he’s going to become antagonistic, I don’t really want a Madame repeat so he may just be a morally grey government head. The main thing is the fact that people claim that he acts more like a dictator than a true leader (who everyone thought and still thinks Madame was), but whatever happens with that happens, I don’t plan on making him a story centered antagonist because as I said, I don’t want a Madame repeat.
Speaking of Madame Luetta, something important I feel like I should establish and explain early on is the after effects of Madame Luetta’s control, and how the events of Step III affects how people begin to understand the Infection (Hence the name of the story: The Legacy of Nature’s Revival :]). Madame Luetta was widely accepted as a very intelligent and influential leader, while her sanity may have not been fully there, she could very easily mask her true nature and would then appear sane and ladylike, while also being widely regarded as a very intelligent woman. While the original government heads would hide themselves away and use whatever power they had left to keep themselves safe, Madame actually prioritized the safety of the citizens and used her power and control to build up the city and keep everyone safe inside of it. Madame *did* have her own agenda, as you already know she was a Creature Hunter, however she was able to play her cards correctly and both work towards hunting Creature’s while also protecting the city, she realized early on that the first step to being able to enact her plan was to establish safety and rebuild the city, something that took at least a decade to accomplish. While Madame is seen as a crazy lady and evil Creature Hunter from many of the Step III POVs, to the people of the City she was (and still is seen as) a great leader and someone who put the people first, especially when she establishes the theory that Creature’s are the cause of the Infection, and then is instantly proved right by Knell. Meaning anyone who witnessed the mass-Infection of the Creature Hunters by Knell’s hands will truly believe Creature’s should be considered part of the Infection and will not be easily swayed otherwise. If there’s any credit I can give to Madame it is that she *was* a good leader, a morally corrupt one at that but if you take out her Creature Hunting (aka see it from the perspective of a majority of the citizens) she only ever did what was best for the city and is the reason it is what it is in Legacy.
I feel like another reason Legacy is really enjoyable to think about right now is because it doesn’t have such a spread out story (aka at least fifteen years worth of story) and it’s very adventure based, like yes B.A. characters travel around sometimes but the story was very confined to specific areas, meanwhile Legacy (aside from being very city focused) is basically everywhere in between while occasionally stopping at towns and I’m having fun with that.
Now for some worldbuilding notes :)
Gardeners are a specific type of specialized guards meant to deal with the Infection. I thought of the name because of obvious reasons, they control how the Infection affects the city, they do the “weeding” so to speak. I also found it amusing because vocally it literally has “guard” in it. One of the characters is a Gardener, but his design isn’t fully finished because I still want to conceptualize the uniform more and figure out techniques and weaponry (I need to figure out how advanced society has become with handling the Infection before I get too carried away, not having an exact timeline is really kicking my butt)
Gardeners weaponry/defense:
-iron armor
-iron shields
-gas masks
-flame throwers (mainly used by a specialized branch of Gardeners)
-Gardening tools:
Gardening tools such as pruning shears, secateurs, and weeding trowels are often used by the medical team to handle Infection based care that their surgical equipment can’t handle. It is also used by the scientists and doctors who study infected.
-iron weapons:
Iron weapons are used by both your typical defense based Gardener as well as the Creature specialists (who are basically Creature Hunter’s with a fancy new title and respectable place in society)
Axes are most common due to the accuracy with slowing down Infected, but other iron-based weapons such as crossbows and knifes are also used on occasion
Iron based nets are also commonly used to slow down the larger Infected
The current leader thought of the idea of Gardeners during Madame’s control, his father was one of the people keeping the Infected at bay while the walls were being built and formed a group during that, which his son would later use to establish “Gardeners.”
Penny + crew is trying (key word: trying) to spread the idea of using flower based weaponry against the infection instead of iron, which was popularized due to Madame Luetta’s theory, because it’s a more peaceful route. The intention is to help the Fae, who are being heavily impacted by the wide use of iron, but because of the confirmed connection between the Fae/Creature’s and the Infection no one will listen and doesn’t care if the fae are hurt.
Oh yeah, side note, but Creature’s are now officially considered “Fae/Faeries” :) While Creature’s have always been a type of “fairy,” I originally did not call them as such because I didn’t know much about that type of folklore and was therefore hesitant to use that kind of name for them, I also originally called them “Creature’s” as a name placeholder but then it kind of just stuck. However I’ve decided I officially want to call them Fae, however I’ll still be calling them Creatures as that is what they’re typically called within the world of Brooklet Avenue, think of their title of “Creature” as their human given name, while “Fae/Faerie” is their cultural, true name, which was never learned due to their reluctance to interact with or communicate with humans. Because of this they are still widely known as Creatures, but characters such as Penny, Jolie, Mary, and Steven all call them Fae/Faeries in Legacy. With the exception of when they feel the need to still call them “Creatures” around certain people, as it is not widely accepted to show any kind of respect to “the things that nearly brought this world to it’s end.”
The River Town keeps being approached by Gardeners and city officials who claims that they should allow the city to establish Gardeners within the town, saying that their “sanctuary” won’t be one much longer as the Infection appears to have been slowly evolving and adapting to different environments. They claim that it would be in the town’s best interest to establish Gardeners within before the Infection breaches their rivers natural shielding, but the citizens of The River Town won’t hear of it as they’ve been shielded from the Infection since it started and refuses to allow the city to reestablish any form of control over their town.
And now here’s the current POVs :)
(POVs 1 and 3 meet up first and then later connects to POV 2, POVs 4 and 5 are more of their own thing)
POV 1:
-Paisley Brown
-Rori Crowell
POV 2:
-SpiderLily
-Percy Brown
POV 3:
-Evie Goldborne
-Bonibell (surname not yet decided)
POV 4:
-Sylas Crowell
-(unnamed Gardener)
POV 5:
-Jolie Cardinal
-Josephine “Mary” Cardinal
-Penny “Daisy” Brown
-Steven VonLillian
This is just in general and not Legacy specific, but if you ever have a piece of lore you want to know about or simply have a question or idea, the comments are always open for that. Constructive criticism and questions are always welcome because it gives boosts to my brainstorming :>
